Congrats to GetWindstream’s Paper Map Challenge Winner!

Move over, Magellan! After reviewing many applications from eager participants, GetWindstream selected a winning duo for the Paper Map Challenge. In order to receive $1,500, the selected applicants were tasked with navigating their town for 7 days without any help from GPS. We sent them a swag bag of items including their own paper map, an instant camera, and a compass to help them complete the task.

Ashley’s upbeat and eager demeanor made her a prime candidate for this navigation challenge. Growing up, Ashley’s dad always used a map to move around town, and her fiancé, Jason, has a knack for remembering locations.

She and Jason worked together on this challenge and safely made their way to three locations in their town. While some locations were easier to navigate to than others, they became significantly more frustrated trying to travel there without GPS. “Despite being from this area, we [didn’t] realize how little we pay attention to actual addresses on buildings,” shared Ashley.

Ashley and Jason’s greatest challenge occurred as a result of non-labeled buildings and business parks. Though they disagreed a few times on the path they should take to different locations, they found the challenge enjoyable and were able to laugh off their frustrations. “The best part [of the challenge] was being able to do it with each other. We are great at problem solving and being able to work together.”

Congratulations to Ashley and Jason on successfully completing the challenge and thank you to all who applied!

The Paper Map Challenge

How did families on road trips find their route before the internet? How did pirates find buried treasure without a GPS? How would you find your way around your city without your smartphone?

The answer: a good ol’ fashioned paper map.

We live in a time where cars have computers that can instantly calculate the fastest route to your destination and everyone has a device in their pocket that can be triangulated by satellites at any moment, but it wasn’t very long ago that this wasn’t the case.

Over the past few decades, high-speed internet connections and GPS technology have slowly replaced the need for navigating with bulky atlases and road maps. These days, you can use your phone to just as easily find the perfect route across the country or to the new pizza place downtown, which means that many young people have never had to use a paper map to navigate from Point A to Point B.

If a paper map was your only option, could you find your destination? It’s time to find out.

GetWindstream is selecting one lucky young couple to pay $1,500 to complete our Paper Map Challenge. The couple will have seven days to work as a team to find three different locations in their city with the help of only a paper map. Sound easy? Don’t be so sure.
